{image001.jpg} Eco Schools and Earth Day
Its 40 years since the first Earth Day. That event, like Earth Hour, began as a grassroots movement. Likewise, environmental action in our schools and outdoor education centres began at the grassroots, with a band of dedicated teachers and students inspiring their school communities to become involved.
EcoSchools is built on the foundation of that grassroots work done over the decades. After eight years, it is still a young program, but it has grown well beyond its grassroots origins. It is no longer a program for "environmentalists"; with 311 of our 558 schools certified this year, it is fast becoming a program for everyone. Over the years we have come to see that grassroots action, while powerful, is not enough. It must be supported at all levels of an organization. That is happening at the TDSB.
Here are some ideas for what you can do at home to help conserve energy, save the environment, and save money, too!
    1. Park It
Leave your car at home for a day (or a week or a month) and try walking or biking. If work is too far away to walk, take public transit or carpool. One city bus eliminates the emissions of 40 cars.
    2. Shut Down
Turn off the lights, the computer and the TV when not in use. Use only highly efficient and money saving appliances to reduce your electricity consumption.
    3. Where's The Beef?
Try eating meat-free at least one day a week. A meat-based diet requires seven times more land than a plant-based diet. Livestock production is responsible for more climate change gasses than all the motor vehicles in the world.
    4. Eat It
Choose foods produced organically, locally and in season. Support your regional farmers & farming industry. Buying locally and in season is better for the environment than buying foods that have been shipped hundreds of kilometres to your local market.
    5. Let It Rot
Put a composter in your backyard or use your green bin to reduce household waste. Composting organics reduces the amount of waste going to landfills and helps nourish soil and plants.
    6. Don't Be Idle
Turn off your car's engine if stopped for more than 10 seconds. If every driver of a light duty vehicle avoided idling by five minutes a day, collectively, we would save 1.8 million litres of fuel per day, almost 4500 tonnes of GHG emissions, and $2 million in fuel costs.
    7. Keep Your Eye On The Temperature
Set your thermostat above room temperature in summer and below room temperature in winter. For each degree you adjust, you can save five per cent on your utility bill and one per cent on your energy use.
    8. Bright Ideas
Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). A CFL uses only 25 per cent as much energy as an incandescent bulb and lasts 10 times longer.
    9. Don't Dump It - Blue Box It!
The simple act of recycling has more impact on the environment that the average Canadian thinks. The amount of wood and paper North Americans throw away each year is enough to heat five million homes for 200 years.
    10. Tell Someone
This is a great opportunity to brag. Tell someone what you're doing to make the world a better place. Support the cause. Encourage them to get involved too!
    {litterlesslunchbox.jpg} Boomerang and Waste-Free Lunches
Did you know that an average school age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year? We believe strongly that we need to educate and support our children so that they can be more aware of how things like disposable lunches impact the environment. We hope that families have discussions about the waste that is generated, and also take action to reduce this situation so that we, as a school community, can make a difference and help the environment.

    Please bookmark
our students to reduce food and food-related waste by implementing a waste-free or boomerang lunch program.
A waste-free lunch contains no throwaway packaging and produces no food waste. Food and drinks are packed in reusable containers within a reusable lunch bag. All containers are resealable, so that leftover food and drink can be saved for later.
A boomerang lunch means that any uneaten food and any waste material produced is returned home and no added to the school’s waste collection. It is important that this food and waste packaging be taken home in a resealable container or bag so that lunch bags and back packs remain clean! The purpose of a boomerang lunch is not to transfer trash disposal responsibilities from the school to home. It is to encourage parents and students to review and think about the way they prepare and package lunch foods.
Both a waste-free and a boomerang lunch enable parents to see what their children are actually eating during the day. Waste audits carried out at schools consistently demonstrate that a significant amount of this waste is made up of unopened packaged foods, uneaten fruit, full juice boxes, etc. Uneaten fruit and food that is added to the school waste can become a wasp hazard, especially in the fall and spring. This organic waste can be returned home and added to the Green bin, the Toronto Region wide organics waste program.
    Some Waste-Free Lunch Tips:
    - instead of expensive plastic sandwich bags, one reusable container can be used for packing snacks, sandwiches, etc. No more squished food!
    - Cut fruit and vegetables into pieces so that some can be eaten at lunch and the rest saved for a later snack
    - Prepare extra food at dinner time and use the leftovers for lunches
    - Label all containers to ensure that they return home if lost
    - Minimize the morning rush and pack lunches the night before and refrigerate overnight
    - Avoid drinks in packaging that cannot be resealed; after a few sips, drinks are often discarded
    Eco School
Did you ever wonder what exactly it is that we do in order to be considered an eco-school? We participate in a stringent evaluation process, and we must meet certain criteria in order to sustain our standing. Here’s what we’ve been doing this year in order to reach platinum status and do our bit to save the earth:
Let the Sunlight In is done to encourage our classrooms to let natural light into our classrooms and reduce the need for overhead electrical lighting – this is done each recess
Classroom Surveys – this is a reminder to staff and students and a checklist which is submitted to Eco-Schools to give a reading
new site on our eco-friendly habits:
Save Our Resources – students check recycling bins and garbage cans to sure that everything that is recyclable doesn’t end up in a landfill – this is done each recess
Project Stand By is done at the end of every day to ensure that
all computers are placed on the most energy efficient setting, stand-by, to save energy
Keep the Heat In is done every Friday after school to ensure that our blinds are drawn before the weekend to keep heat in, so that we use less energy to heat the building the following week
    {image005.jpg} Staff Green Habits
Use scrap paper as often as possible – we do not just recycle paper
Load the printer used most often by students with scrap paper
    Print on both sides
Minimize top, bottom, left and right margins
Press energy saves on photocopier after every use
Use overhead or data projectors when possible
Turn off all unnecessary lights when teaching – volunteer to have the light switch for bulb closest to window to be taped off
Turn off lights in washroom and double check taps are off – put up eco club made signs
Compost in the staffroom from staff lunches
    Computer Lab
Students taught to cut and paste all work/images/research onto a word document, minimize blank spaces and show teacher before printing
Put up signs and learn how to put computers on stand by and turn off monitors at the end of every lesson
    Reducing Car Usage
i-walk Program™ – Walk to school and get a stamp – once enough stamps are earned for the “golden shoe”, students enter into a draw for a prize
    Recycling
Grade 7 class collects recycling for entire school
Cathy’s Crawly Composters™ – grade 3 class has classroom composters
Litterless Lunch – monitors tally the non recyclable and recyclable
    Eco Literacy Curriculum
Earth Rangers – learned about saving animals, environment and resources
Morning announcements over P.A.: eco reminders, eco facts, eco compliments
Eco Assembly at the end of September
    Downsview Park – tree planting
    Earth Hour
    Clean Ups
Lunch time clean up of our environment, clean ups around the community
    Trees / Yard
Water Warriors – Eco Club waters trees every lunch time in fall and spring
